Hi! We now have all of our cutting completed and today we will organise our strips and start sewing our ‘Dream to Achieve’ Joining Strips
Lay your strips out and change their positions until you are happy with the arrangement. I like mine this way!
Nanny Note: The top strip will be under the pillow when done!
Now that we have made that decision, it is time to get sewing!!
Let’s Sew!
1. Take the first 9″ strip, fold it in half and finger press or pop a pin in to mark it.
2. Then fold the ends to the pin and mark again:
This side and then the other
3. Do the same with a 2.5″ strip (Sashing)
4. With right sides together, put the sashing strip on top of the top of the 9″ strip
5. Match up your marks/pins and pin together.
Nanny Note: Notice how I face the pins in from the side so that they will be easily removed as I sew up to them
6. We do not have to worry about precise 1/4″ seams – just keep them the same using your foot or mark on your machine. Using a starter scrap(this helps avoid bunching up of threads at the start) and a normal sewing stitch, (mine is 2.5) start sewing. When you get onto the quilt fabric do a couple of reverse stitches and then sew along the edge, removing pins as you go. Finish with a couple of reverse stitches too.
Many quilters will say this is not necessary, but as I know how much handling these will take, I think it is a good idea! Cut off your scrap starter to use again!
7. Take to your ironing board and press. We do this by pressing the seam as it was sewn. This will ‘set’ the stitches.
Nanny Note: (press down on your iron but don’t iron back and forwards).
8. Then press the seam to one side. I want my seams to go to the dark fabric so I will flip it over so that the dark is on top.
Now lift the top fabric and press away from the seam .
The other side shows a nicely pressed seam facing the dark fabric:
9. Repeat that process with the next six 9″ strips. You will have a strip left with no sashing attached.
7. Celebrate your success so far – take a photo and post it on the Facebook page or Flickr page to be eligible for a sponsor gift!
Until next time
Nanny xx
